The first article of the three-part series on the Hanna industrial complex described how Hanna Mining Company, as the result of the coup overthrowing Goulart in 1964, acquired control over the worlds richest iron ore deposit in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The success of Hanna Mining Co. in gaining this concession to develop the lucrative mineral deposit is one illustration of how the locus of political-economic decisions on the use of Brazilian resources shifted decisively from Brazil to the United States after the coup.
