The North American Congress on Latin America, an independent non-profit established in 1966, is currently seeking candidates for internship positions for both Spring and Summer 2012. Interns will assist staff in the production of our award-winning magazine, NACLA Report on the Americas, as well as with programs, events, and development. While interns are unpaid, course credit can be arranged. All positions will start as soon as possible, and can be arranged for one or two semesters.

1. Editorial Intern: Assist editors in producing NACLA Report on the Americas, the most widely read English-language magazine on Latin America. Tasks include generating story ideas, general research, photo research, proofreading, and fact-checking, as well as administrative work, like handling author communication and helping to build and maintain a database of authors. Graduate students who use this internship to fulfill academic degree requirements are preferred. Time commitment is at least two days a week (or more, depending on degree requirement). Qualifications: Background in Latin America and the Caribbean or training in Latin American and Caribbean studies. Ability to write well and pay attention to detail is essential. Basic computer skills (Mac) required. Knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese helpful. Familiarity with NACLA Report on the Americas a definite plus. 2. Social Media Interns: Assist editorial and administrative staff in doing more social media outreach to relevant publications, organizations and bloggers. Tasks include: posting daily updates of NACLA articles, blogs and events; driving more traffic to the NACLA website; recruiting more followers for NACLA on Facebook, Twitter, Google +, and other social media platforms; monitoring and responding to web comments; posting comments on other relevant sites to encourage more communication; assisting in developing an overall web marketing strategy for NACLA's Report and archive. 3. Circulation/Outreach Intern: Assist publishing staff with publication and circulation of NACLA Report on the Americas. Tasks include circulation support, including handling orders and assisting with inventory; online outreach, including use of networking sites, new media, blogs, etc.; distributor and circulation outreach, including identifying new markets and creating marketing materials; and advertising support, including identifying new advertisers and generating new advertising strategies. Time commitment is preferably 2 days a week. Qualifications: An interest in the business of magazine publication and advertising is required. Prior experience in marketing/outreach is a plus. 4. Development/Programs Intern: Assist the Director with development and program activities. Tasks include grant research and reporting; donor correspondence and data processing; and assistance at events and programs. Time commitment is flexible, but preferably 2 days a week. Qualifications: An interest in non-profit fund-raising, especially as a grassroots organizing tool, is required. Some prior experience with grant research or other development activity is helpful. Basic computer skills required, especially knowledge of Excel and Word merge functions and database work. Some flexibility in schedule, to help organize and attend events, is helpful.
