NACLA Announces 2008 Chavkin Prize The 2008 Samuel Chavkin Prize for Integrity in Latin American Journalism will be presented on September 22 by PBS's Maria Hinojosa to Diana Washington Valdez of the El Paso Times. Diana Washington Valdez is an award-winning investigative journalist and author whose work focuses on U.S.-Mexico border affairs and the ongoing murders and disappearances of over 400 women in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. She as been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and received a Texas APME First Place Award. She is the author of The Killing Fields: Harvest of Women, an investigative book about the Juárez women's murders, drug cartels and government corruption in Mexico. The ceremony will be held at 6:00 pm at the Fireplace and Terrace Room of SEIU local 32BJ's headquarters: 101 Avenue of the Americas - 23rd floor - New York, NY 10013. The Next Cuban Missile Crisis? by Nikolas Kozloff Venezuela and Russia recently announced they will be conducting joint-naval exercises off Venezuela's Caribbean coast in November. The announcement comes amid bitter diplomatic dispute between Russia and the United States over the war in South Ossetia. Read More

A Tale of Three Marches: Mexico's Scattered Politics by Fred Rosen Marchers have recently taken to the streets in Mexico on three different occasions. At the center of the storm is President Calderón's proposed step-by-step privatization of the nation's state-owned oil company, Pemex.
