Puerto Rico Teach-in

September 25, 2007

A teach-in on Puerto Rico will be held at Horace Mann auditorium at Columbia Teacher's College on Thursday July 13 starting at 7PM. The teach-in is being jointly presently by TACQA, the Tri-Continental Information Center, SDS, Couslar, SNCC and the MPI (Movement for Puerto Rican Independence) because of the urgency for North Americans to understand the roles that the U..S, government and institutions are playing in Latin America. The case of Puerto Rico is particularly relevant in the way that it is being used as a model for proposed U. S. plans for development in the hemisphere. Speakers at the teach-in will critically examine this proposition in terms of the realities of the island. The questions to be raised include: 1. What sectors of Puerto Ricans society benefit from the economic development program of Operation Bootstrap? 2. What has been the impact of the domination in Puerto Rico by the U.S. on the island's culture and society? 3. How has U.S. political power been exercised in Puerto Rico and what are the possibilities for the Puerto Rican people to regain control of their island?

Speakers will include--Juan Anriel Silen (MPI), Stanley Aronowritz, labor organizer in Puerto Rico, M. Rapp Browm, new Chairman of SNCC, Tom Hayden, Newark Community Union Project, and Rafael Ruiz (New York MPI).

Transcripts of the teach-in w-ill be made available for those who cannot come.
