Blood at the Blockade: Peru's Indigenous Uprising

Beginning with a series of protests last year, Peru's Amazonian indigenous groups are now leading a full-fledged rebellion against the pro-business policies of President Alan García. The government has responded with brutal violence to the protests, which are demanding that a series of decrees to promote extractive industries in the jungle be overturned among other things. Amazonian groups, who are being joined by an ever-widening swath of society, are now calling for García's resignation.

Venezuela's Media Quake

But a recent controversy over an opposition news channel's coverage of a mild earthquake shows the government has legitimate reasons for holding politically motivated news channels accountable. The controversy also demonstrates how foreign media promote local distortions seeking to demonize the Chávez government.

Job Opening: NACLA Web Editor
The North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA) seeks a part-time web editor to coordinate all aspects of the organization's online news content. Although advanced web design/coding knowledge is a definite plus, this job does not require extensive technical skills.

Primary responsibilities include coordinating all editorial content of the website, managing a team of volunteer Research Associates who remotely contribute articles to the website, managing and soliciting outside editorial submissions to the website, writing original articles for the site and monitoring independent media sites for articles on Latin America.

The position requires editorial and copy editing experience, compatibility with the goals and perspectives of NACLA, knowledge of Latin America and U.S. foreign policy, fluency in Spanish, excellent writing and editing skills, ability to work on deadline, and more.
