NACLA Update 07/21/11

Dear NACLA friends,

If you were unable to subscribe beforehand, the print edition of our Mexico Drug Crisis issue is now available in bookstores! You can also purchase the current issue from our archive. And for those of you eager to start your subscription with the upcoming issue "Cuba: Salvaging a Revolution," don't forget to take advantage of our Cuba discount (promo code: CUBA11) before it expires on July 26!

This week, we published an interview with the anthropologist Howard Campbell, discussing his article "No End in Sight: Violence in Ciudad Juárez." Campbell explained how drug prohibition, military and police intervention, and the economic depression in Mexico made Ciudad Juárez the most dangerous city on the planet, with the highest homicide rate in 2010, totaling officially to 3,111 killings (not including the significant number of unreported deaths).

The "Mexico Drug Crisis" issue also features coverage on the culture of smalltime traffickers along the U.S.-Mexico border, and two critical essays on the Mexican media's portrayal of the crisis—the first dissects the media's "marketing campaign" for drug war policies, and the second analyzes the dual media images of drug-war carnage and half-naked women that mask Mexico's real violence.

For those of you who are not subscribed yet, you can access our Taking Note, Open Forum, and Tracking the Economy columns, in addition to the stories of four women traffickers and a 16-year-old hit man for FREE. In addition, all website visitors can read the latest updates on the drug war, and analysis of current events in Mexico, Colombia, Bolivia, and much more on our daily blogs for no cost. NACLA bloggers offer valuable insight into immediate events with direct coverage from the field, investigative research, and photo essays. Recent posts include:

Don't forget to comment on our blogs, and stay tuned for more upcoming interviews with contributors to our Mexico issue, and a preview of our August issue, "Cuba: Salvaging a Revolution."
