In Memoriam

Yesterday morning Colombia and Latin America lost one of its most influential intellectuals and social scientists: Álvaro Camacho Guizado, a colleague, mentor, and, above all, a very dear friend. Camacho dedicated his life and energy to the study of narco-trafficking. He was also an early critical voice against U.S. anti-drug policy in Colombia.

On August 16, in New York, the great Venezuelan anthropologist Fernando Coronil died of cancer. That he is gone is unthinkable. Our duty now is to keep his energy—which sustained and inspired so many of us—alive.

On Thursday, June 30, hundreds of people packed into Manhattan's Riverside Church for the launch of 22nd Caravan to Cuba, and a memorial tribute to the late Reverend Lucius Walker, Jr. Among the people that spoke at the event was former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, who captured the spirit of the evening, reminding the audience that "now is the time as never before" to continue the work that Walker began.
