News from NACLA

NEW FEATURE Over the years, NACLA has received many letters in response to the Report, and we are sure that many more of our readers could make important criticisms and contributions to our work. In order to encourage this type of feed- back, NACLA will begin a "Readers Respond" section in the coming months. Although we realize that our readers are in- terested in a wide variety of issues, we ask that all letters specifically address what is published in the Report ... or what should be published in the Report. We are interested in cor- rections to or opinions about our articles and suggestions as to how NACLA can become a more valuable resource. We would also like to hear how the Report is be- ing used. Send all letters to Readers Respond, NACLA, 151 W. 19th St., 9th Floor, New York, NY 10011. (Letters may be excerpted due to space constraints.) CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS Although NACLA is finally set- tled in its new home, we still have a lot of "spring cleaning" to do. To make our library more useful to the community, we are starting to reorganize and index it, and straighten out our files. And we can always use help with administrative and production tasks. If you're interested and have sometime to spare, please call us at (212) 989-8890. Thanks. NICARAGUA CONFERENCE NACLA attended a National Conference on Nicaragua on February 24-25, in Washington, D.C. It was called in response to the need to coordinate efforts in the United States against the Somoza ruling structure and in support of the Nicaraguan people's struggle for self- determination. Over 300 people from all over the United States participated in the conference, representing Nicaraguan and other solidarity groups, human rights organiza- tions, religious activist groups, trade unionists, congressional representatives and others. Recognizing the centrality of U.S. responsibility in the creation and maintenance of Somocismo, the Conference agreed to a four- part campaign of work and political education, including a Na- tional Week of Solidarity with the Nicaraguan People, on April 22-28. Special efforts are being planned to alert the U.S. public to a possi- ble coup by the National Guard. According to the FSLN, it is being engineered by Somoza himself, with U.S. tacit approval.
