Free Trade 2.0

Eleven years after mass mobilizations defeated the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), Latin America now faces a moment of resurgent economic empire, once more driven by the U.S.’s desire to extend the reach of free trade and investment. Nowhere has this been more apparent than in the debate surrounding the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). In this NACLA Report, our contributors offer a detailed look at the TPP and explore changes and continuities of U.S. interests amidst the economic opening of Cuba, how capital interests will shape post-peace accord Colombia, and the impact of transnational mining on indigenous and campesino communities in Guatemala and beyond.
