Larry Birns, long-time director of the Washington D.C.-based Council on Hemispheric Affairs (COHA) and dear friend of NACLA, passed away last August at the age of 89. Among the sharpest critics in the English-speaking left of U.S. intervention in Latin America, Birns always modeled the kind of tireless advocacy of social justice and solidarity we at NACLA have long sought to promote. He and COHA leave a legacy of rigorous, politically committed research that will continue to inspire generations of progressive-minded activists and scholars. We are honored to share testimonials from various naclistas on the mentor, friend, and humanist that was Larry Birns.
