Film Festival for Nicaragua: Exiliada

Join us for a free screening of Exiliada/Exiled and panel discussion. Exiliada, by Nicaraguan filmmaker Leonor Zuñiga tells the story of Zoilamérica Narvaez Murillo. In 1998, Narvaez accused her stepfather, political leader and Sandinista president Daniel Ortega, of sexually abusing her when she was a minor. Both Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, dismissed Narvaez's accusation as political sabotage. Nicaraguan feminista rallied around Narvaez, many formally breaking with the Sandinista Front. Following Daniel Ortega's election as president in 2006 and subsequent harassment, Narvaez went into exile in Costa Rica. Exiliada follows Narvaez and her family through the Ortega's third presidential election in 2016, when he nominated his wife to serve as vice president. This timely film addresses the intersections of sexual assult, family, and political power.

**The 20-minute documentary will be followed by a panel discussion with academics and human rights activists. The event will be held in English and Spanish.
